Meeting and Event Industry Should Boycott Alabama Now

In case you missed it, Alabama Gov. Robert Bentley (R) had the audacity to say that if you are not Christian, you are not his brother of sister…

Alabama Gov. Robert Bentley (R) commemorated the legacy of the Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. on Monday, telling a gathering of Alabamians that he didn’t see skin color as a divisive factor. When it came to religion, however, the recently-inaugurated governor raised some eyebrows with a comment on his view of non-Christians in his state.

“So anybody here today who has not accepted Jesus Christ as their savior, I’m telling you, you’re not my brother and you’re not my sister, and I want to be your brother,” Bentley said in his address, according to The Birmingham News, after telling the congregation that he was “color blind.”

You can read the whole story at the post.

Sorry Gov, but in my world, everyone is my brother or sister. My in-laws are Hindu, my sister is Jewish and most of the rest of my family are one form of Christian or another and I am a particular brand of  “whatever” religion.

Governor, you are not color blind, you lie. Most people who are not Christian are of color, therefore, you see color very well. Dr King would crap a brick if he heard someone using his name to incite hatred.

What I find most appalling is that this is the type of thing that is going on in the United States at the moment, our buddies on the Christian Right feels that they need to wage a new Crusade right here in the Good Ol USA for no other reason than the 9/11 terrorists were Muslim. They like to forget that there are plenty of Christian Terrorists all over the globe and understand that terrorism is not a unique phenomenon.

The Governor of Alabama is an idiot.

You may click through to the post to read this entire, disgusting story and learn for yourself what the good people of Alabama have in store for your staff and attendees. Yep….so says the top elected official, so says the state.

I am sure that our meetings industry associations will yet again sit on their hands and not try to offend anyone by actually taking a stand against bigotry and hatred so I will do their dirty work for them.

If you are a meeting and event planner, it is your responsibility to BOYCOTT Alabama until the Governor is replaced. Before I even think about recommending Alabama (and I love the Gulf Coast by the way, you can see my post here although, the Governor of MS is acting weird lately too), the man must be GONE. No halfhearted, fake apologies are going to work.

You can bet that after his advisers figure out what an issue this is turning out to be, he will most likely give one of those “gee, I didn’t mean it like that” stories this week and I am saying that it is time for the Meetings Industry to say that we are not buying this crap anymore. Money talks, and people will listen.

The good people of Alabama (and those are 99.9% of Alabamans) need to realize that they have put in power the type of man that would probably start a holy war if he were President. He would divide our country and he is an embarrassment to our Nation.

Get him gone.
