FAM Trip to Riviera Maya

FAM Trip to the Riviera Maya

I am still on my Mexico kick, I have a soft spot for great destinations that are getting unfair treatment. Over the next couple of days I am going to be featuring a couple of FAM Trips that are taking place in Mexico.

A friend and fellow Site Chicago Board Member asked if I could spread the word and I am more than happy to shout from the roof tops, especially for amazing destinations that really need the support of the Meetings and Events Industry.

Here is the first FAM that I would like to clue you in on, this trip takes place November 12-16, 2011:

Mexico’s Meeting and Conventions Industry Growing as Tourism Surges

I do not normally run press releases anymore, just not something I am that cool with doing since PlannerWire has moved to a more blog/commentary site. This one was brought to my attention by my fellow Site Chicago Board member Teresa Matamoros of Visit Mexico (many of you know her!) and I thought it was worth a mention because I still have some Mexico posts to come in the next couple weeks.

So, here it is!

ICCA ranks Mexico 22nd worldwide for international association meetings

MEXICO CITY, June 7, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ — Mexico’s Meeting, Incentives, Congress, and Exhibitions business continues to grow, and has been ranked 22nd worldwide in the latest rankings by the International Congress and Convention Association (ICCA).   Mexico moved up five (5) places in the 2010  rankings  from its 2009 ranking of 27th, in the number of events with a nearly 31 percent increase in meetings held in Mexico.

This comes to no surprise, as visitor arrivals to Mexico have been on the rise.  Most recently, the Secretariat of Tourism (SECTUR) announced that in 2010 Mexico was the main destination for tourists from the United States by capturing 14.7 percent of overseas US tourism. This represents the highest number of U.S. travelers to Mexico since 2005, according to the U.S. Department of Commerce.

“Destinations and entities continue to invest in infrastructure, equipment and services… But Mexico has much more to offer,” said Gloria Guevara Manzo, Mexico’s Secretary of Tourism, in a press release. “In order to continue our competitiveness, we will also promote less well-known destinations that can be of interest for international conventions.”

And international convention planners have clearly taken notice. In 2010, Mexico was host to 140 international conventions, many of them taking place in Mexico City. ICCA ranked Mexico City 15th on the international list of top cities for congresses and conventions, with more than 36,000 annual participants. Mexico City clinched the 5th spot in the Americas category, having hosted 43 conventions. International meetings are defined as those organized by international associations which take place on a regular basis and rotate between a minimum of three countries.

The conventions and meetings industry and tourism growth may be in part due to increased levels of investment in tourism projects. During the first trimester of 2011, more than US $900 million were spent on tourism projects in Mexico, according to the Secretary of Tourism. The investments represent a 127 percent increase from 2010.   The Secretary of Tourism, has stated that “the resources were primarily allocated to projects relating to the areas of accommodations, real estate tourism, and the food and beverage industry.”

Meetings and Events In Mexico – What You Need to Know

Site Chicago Education Retreat

Opening Day, Site Chicago Event

The problem with Americans is that we are stupid … Really.

In the world we are laughed at because of our ignorance, it is both funny (in a sick way) and frustrating for those of us that try and be good world travelers and although I was just talking some big shit, I too sometimes fall victim to my inner American but at least I give it a go and eat local foods and try and speak the language without butchering it and I will go off the beaten path to see how the locals live, work and play.

One of the things that has been truly frustrating over the past couple of years is the American Media and their treatment of Mexico. If you were to believe everything that they are saying about Mexico, you would think that it is a lawless land with gunslingers, hangings in the square and 12 year old kids carrying AK-47s to school and diseased people staggering through the streets spreading swine flu on purpose.

This is simply not the truth, Mexico is safe.

Because of the bad press, meeting, event and incentive programs are not going to Mexico which is hurting their local economies, impacting people in their daily lives and actually could make the situation worse and yes, I am not an idiot, there is a “situation”.

State Department Egypt Warning -

Here is the info in its entirety because information like this should be shared and I know that there are meeting and event professionals in the region (Good Luck and Godspeed, get home safely and keep your heads down):

Everyone there should take note, even a enthusiastic group of people can turn violent at a moments notice so I would do my best to avoid crowds at all costs so as not to get caught in the middle… do not do the American thing and whip out your camera to get a few pics….

Egypt

January 30, 2011

  • Update – January 31 Curfew hours are 3 p.m. to 8 a.m.

The U.S. Department of State recommends that U.S. citizens avoid travel to Egypt due to ongoing political and social unrest. On January 30, the Department of State authorized the voluntary departure of dependents and non-emergency employees. Violent demonstrations have occurred in several areas of Cairo, Alexandria and other parts of the country, disrupting road travel between city centers and airports. Disruptions in communications, including internet service, may occur. The Government of Egypt has imposed a curfew from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 a.m. in Cairo, Alexandria and Suez until further notice, and U.S. citizens should obey curfew orders and remain indoors during curfew hours. U.S. citizens currently in Egypt should consider leaving as soon as they can safely do so. Cairo airport is open and operating, but flights may be disrupted and transport to the airport may be disrupted due to the protests. Travelers should remain in contact with their airlines or tour operators concerning flight schedules, and arrange to arrive at the airport well before curfew hours.

In the event of demonstrations, U.S. citizens in Egypt should remain in their residences or hotels until the situation stabilizes. Security forces may block off the area around the U.S. Embassy during demonstrations, and U.S. citizens should not attempt to come to the U.S. Embassy or the Tahrir Square area at such times. The U. S. Embassy is open for emergency services for U.S. citizens only until further notice. As always, any change to Embassy hours will be posted on the Embassy website. U.S. citizens in Egypt who require assistance, or those who are concerned that their U.S. citizen loved one in Egypt may require assistance, should contact the U.S. Department of State and the U.S. Embassy in Cairo atEgyptEmergencyUSC@state.gov, or at 1-202-501-4444. Please follow the directions on the Embassy website for all other consular inquiries.

Demonstrations have degenerated on several occasions into violent clashes between police and protesters, resulting in injuries and extensive property damage. While demonstrations have not been directed toward Westerners, U.S. citizens are urged to remain alert to local security developments and to be vigilant regarding their personal security. The U.S. Department of State strongly urges U.S. citizens to avoid all demonstrations, as even peaceful ones can quickly become unruly and a foreigner could become a target of harassment or worse. If caught unexpectedly near a demonstration, U.S. citizens should obey instructions from police and leave the area as quickly as possible. U.S. citizens resident in Egypt should monitor local news broadcasts and U.S. citizen visitors should ask tour guides and hotel officials about any planned demonstrations in the locations they plan to visit. U.S. citizens should carry identification and a cell phone which works in Egypt.

U.S. citizens in Egypt are encouraged to enroll in the Smart Travelers Enrollment Program (STEP) at the following website: https://travelregistration.state.gov. U.S. citizens without internet access may enroll directly at the U.S. Embassy. By enrolling, U.S. citizens make it easier for the Embassy to contact them in case of emergency.

Updated information on travel and security in Egypt may be obtained from the Department of State by calling 1-888-407-4747 toll-free in the United States and Canada or, for callers outside the United States and Canada, on a regular toll line at 1-202-501-4444. For further information, please consult the Country Specific Information for Egypt, as well as the Worldwide Caution.

Lift the Cuba Travel Ban Now

Cuba-Map
48 Years of failure. That is what the American embargo with Cuba is, plain and simple. I have never been a fan of the embargo and although it has made the plots of some James Bond and other movies spectacular, it really is the most stupid freaking thing I have ever heard of.

If we want Castro gone, flood the island with good ol American currency and American tourists. The asshat will be gone before you know it.

Opening up the island would also do wonders for the American meetings and events industry. We would have a whole new playground to work for and conferences would flourish there, Incentives would see a huge bump, other islands would get in the game when Cuban hotels are filled and cruise lines would see a boost as they would have a whole new port of call.

By denying Americans the right to travel to Cuba, we are hurting Americans and Cubans and none are seeing any benefit from this dumb ass, moronic, useless, senseless embargo.

Before you get all up in my “they are socialist” shit, let me tell you a little story. Cuba is the ONLY country that Americans are prevented by law to travel too. Does that not strike you as a little hypocritical.

Want to go to Iran, pony up the funds.. China, get a visa, Somalia… Have at it… Want to go to a little island that is NO threat to the United States and has a 1000 year old leader? For that you will go to jail. That is the dumbest shit I have ever heard of.

The average Cuban loves the United States. They have died time and time again trying to get here to be free. Wouldn’t it be nice to actually go and learn about them, spend our money and support them where they live? Flooding the island with American dollars will not prolong the the life of the douchebag Cuban government, it will derail it and hasten its demise sending it to the dustbin of history.

By allowing every other free nation (Canada, The European Union) the opportunity to travel there and do business there, the American Government is depriving us the opportunity to do some serious, kick ass business. That is unforgivable in this Economy.

I would say that it is time for our long winded, chicken shit, industry associations to take a stand…. They should come out tomorrow, calling for an end to the ridiculous charade that is the Cuban Embargo.

That’s the end of my rant…

Meeting and Event Industry Should Boycott Alabama Now

Alabama Gov. Robert Bentley
The Governor of Alabama speaks for Alabamans. That is why you elect representatives and why they “represent” you. The people of Alabama should have thought about this when they walked into the voting booth and voted in their particular brand of “jerk of the week”. If you did not vote in the last election, I am probably more pissed at you than I am at the asshat in the Governors mansion.

In case you missed it, Alabama Gov. Robert Bentley (R) had the audacity to say that if you are not Christian, you are not his brother of sister…

Alabama Gov. Robert Bentley (R) commemorated the legacy of the Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. on Monday, telling a gathering of Alabamians that he didn't see skin color as a divisive factor. When it came to religion, however, the recently-inaugurated governor raised some eyebrows with a comment on his view of non-Christians in his state.

"So anybody here today who has not accepted Jesus Christ as their savior, I'm telling you, you're not my brother and you're not my sister, and I want to be your brother," Bentley said in his address, according to The Birmingham News, after telling the congregation that he was "color blind."

You can read the whole story at the post.

Sorry Gov, but in my world, everyone is my brother or sister. My in-laws are Hindu, my sister is Jewish and most of the rest of my family are one form of Christian or another and I am a particular brand of  “whatever” religion.

Governor, you are not color blind, you lie. Most people that are not Christian are of color, therefore, you see color very well. Dr King would crap a brick if he heard someone using his name to incite hatred.

What I find most appalling is that this is the type of thing that is going on in the United States at the moment, our buddies on the Christian Right feels that they need to wage a new Crusade right here in the Good Ol USA for no other reason than the 9/11 terrorists were Muslim. They like to forget that there are plenty of Christian Terrorists all over the globe and understand that terrorism is not a unique phenomenon.

The Governor of Alabama is an  idiot.

You may click through to the post to read this entire, disgusting story and learn for yourself what the good people of Alabama have in store for your staff and attendees. Yep….so says the top elected official, so says the state.

I am sure that our meetings industry associations will yet again sit on their hands and not try to offend anyone by actually taking a stand against bigotry and hatred so I will do their dirty work for them.

If you are a meeting and event planner, it is your responsibility to BOYCOTT Alabama until the Governor is replaced. Before I even think about recommending Alabama (and I love the Gulf Coast by the way, you can see my post here although, the Governor of MS is acting weird lately too), the man must be GONE. No halfhearted, fake apologies are going to work.

You can bet that after his advisers figure out what an issue this is turning out to be, he will most likely give one of those “gee, I didn't mean it like that” stories this week and I am saying that it is time for the Meetings Industry to say that we are not buying this crap anymore. Money talks, people will listen.

The good people of Alabama (and those are 99.9% of Alabamans) need to realize that they have put in power the type of man that would probably start a holy war if he were President. He would divide our country and he is an embarrassment to our Nation.

Get him gone.

Alpine Skiing in Hawaii

So, there was a news report over the weekend that there is snow in 49 of the 50 states and this is pretty rare and yes, it is probably related to global warming, it has to do with high pressure over Siberia that forces cold air south or something like that. I read the explanation somewhere but this is not the time or the place.

After the newscaster said that the only state without snow is Florida, people went crazy, yelling that there is no snow in Hawaii. I have seen the comment section of many blogs where people are literally screaming about the fact that Hawaii “HAS NO SNOW”.

Now, to all of those idiots, I will simply remind you of what you should have learned in grade school. Hawaii has very tall mountains in the form of Volcanoes and I have known since I was a kid that you could ski there after reading an article in Ski or Skiing magazine as a young New England skier back in the 80s.

Here is a quick snip from Yahoo:

Both Mauna Loa (13,679 feet) and Mauna Kea (13,796 feet) are over 13,000 feet in height and while it never drops below zero degrees on top of the mountains it does get cold enough to snow every year. The coldest temperature ever recorded in Hawaii is 12 degrees which occurred on May 17, 1979 at the weather station located on top of Mauna Kea.

In the Hawaiian language Mauna means “mountain” and Kea means “white” so the Hawaiians called Mauna Kea the White Mountain because of the snow that annually accumulates on the peak.

Technically Mauna Kea is the tallest mountain on earth and is thousands of feet taller than Mount Everest. But most of Mauna Kea lies below the ocean so Mount Everest is the tallest mountain on earth above sea level.

The snow levels on top of Mauna Kea are sometimes high enough for people to ski or snowboard. There are no ski lifts or accommodations at the top for skiers but there is a road that goes right to the top.

Meeting and event planners take note, this is pretty rough stuff so I would not plan on taking the boss or the conference attendees. No lifts (you need a 4×4), no lodge, no cocktails, no rentals and certainly no apris ski scene until you get back to the beach.

But (there is always a but), if this was an incentive trip… hmmm, the gears are turning because this could be a once in a lifetime opportunity for someone to do something really cool.

Just to prove to everyone, here is a link to alpine skiing on the Big Island and a video of some dude doing it:

St Louis CVC Pay to Play is Shameful

Arch
@joaneisenstodt brought a great article to my attention today, it centers on new signs for tourists in St Louis that ignore local attractions that couldn’t pay the fee to be listed. This is my blog and my opinion, so take this as you will because I have problems with this and I am about to call this one as I see it.

On its face, this might seem like an OK idea, but it really is not. Here are some small snips from the StLouisToday.com article with my thoughts thrown in.

In the coming months, workers will erect hundreds of signs intended to point tourists to the best that St. Louis has to offer. But the $1.7 million effort will overlook many of the area’s most historic, unusual and off-the-beaten-path destinations.

That’s because it’s a pay-to-play campaign, and the St. Louis Convention and Visitors Commission is asking attractions to pay tens of thousands of dollars to be mentioned on the signs, which will be placed on prominent streets. Big commercial attractions — like casinos and sports facilities — can afford the hefty price tag, as can many of the biggest — and richest — cultural institutions.

But dozens of smaller attractions that could benefit from the exposure will be ignored because they were never approached by the CVC or they simply can’t afford to participate.

“You’ve got to spend money to make money, but you have to have money to spend it,” said William Piper, the chairman of the board of trustees for the Eugene Field House Foundation, which runs the historic house of the poet on the south side of downtown. He said the museum would have had to pay more than $25,000 to participate in the CVC’s street signage program.

“We just couldn’t play in that league,” said Piper, a lawyer.

Why not use funds from the Hotel Tax to include the smaller institutions? Why not have different costs of entry based on how much revenue an institution or attraction has? Why not come up with something that would include everyone…….unless the CVC did not want everyone to be listed (you will notice in the article that it says “not everyone was approached”).

Who won’t be listed?

The Campbell and Eugene Field houses aren’t the only historic downtown landmarks that won’t be listed. Nor will Soldiers Memorial, the Scott Joplin House and the city’s oldest building — the Old Cathedral next to the Arch.

Another religious attraction also won’t be on the signs. Monsignor Joseph Pins, rector of the Cathedral Basilica of St. Louis, said he would have to spend about $25,000 to get signs directing tourists to the New Cathedral and its world-famous collection of religious mosaics. “I just couldn’t in conscience spend that much money, especially in this economy,” he said.

“The program really seemed geared towards the large organizations,” Clifford said. “You’d really need to have revenue of a million dollars or more to justify this.”

Even some of the city’s better known institutions — such as Jefferson Barracks, the St. Louis County Museum of Transportation or Laumeier Sculpture Park — won’t appear on the signs, intended mostly for out-of-towners.

So, now your attendees will be guided directly to the attractions that can pay:

Big commercial attractions — like casinos and sports facilities — can afford the hefty price tag, as can many of the biggest — and richest — cultural institutions.

It seems to me that this load of crap was not thought out very well and is not the success that the St Louis CVC thinks it is (or hopes it will be). This is actually a shameful moment in their history and geared for big business and big money partners.

It is my humble opinion that the St Louis CVC could have worked to find a solution for everyone but decided to jump in bed with the highest bidders rather than put in the effort and mind numbing 30 minutes of thought it would have taken to come up with something better.

Seriously, they spend hundreds of thousands on a study and this is the best they can do……I have two plans that would pay for the whole f’ing thing and it took me 34 seconds….seriously, I timed it on my Timex.

So, now we have a conundrum and the CVC credibility is now called into question.

Can meeting and event professionals now trust anything that the St Louis CVC says or are they steering us toward the properties, venues and attractions that feed the machine with the highest bid. You should see the comment section of the article….

“Well Mr Meeting Planner, it is our opinion that you should choose Hotel A because they are the best”….. but please do not look behind the curtain a the suitcase full of cash moving through.

Whether they like it or not (and obviously not here), a CVC, CVB, XYZ or whatever, is tasked with representing a city or destination.

It is the smaller destinations and attractions that need the signs, not the big ones.

I fully understand that it costs money to do that and some attractions may get a better push than others, but this program is 100% bullshit on its face and I really, really wonder what the other motivation is here because informing tourists how to get the screwing stadium or casino is certainly not necessary…. they already know how to get to the big attractions or perhaps the $150,000 study neglected to tell them that.

In fact, if you wanted to put up nice signs, why do a 6 figure study……….just put them up. A study that told them to do this in 2 phases…. seriously, whose freaking brother in law was the consultant on this one.

In the famous words of a Dude named Ted “Strange things are afoot at the Circle-K”……maybe they should do a study to tell them what…..

Site Inspection Notes – Hotel Orrington, Evanston, IL

Orrington Amphitheater

OK, I have to start this post by saying that I was really not looking forward to this site visit, not that I really knew that I was actually going on this site inspection… You see, I was sitting at my desk when the phone rang and a colleague said “get off your butt and get to the Orrington in Evanston”…having known the Orrington I was thinking, “Uggg, what a waste of time, no one wants to go to the Orrington”.

For those of you not familiar with Evanston, the city is the first suburb directly north of Chicago and sits on the shores of Lake Michigan. The term suburb should be used very loosly because Evanston is a big city with a dense population center, tall buildings, elevated CTA trains and all of the big city amenities. Evanston is also home to Northwestern University so it is young and hip and makes people like me feel really old.

I was last at the Orrington about 10 years ago with an association that I worked for, it has been so long that I really don’t remember what I was doing there… I think it might have been a networking thing. I remember not being overly impressed, to me, the Orrington was a run down old battle ax not worthy of the 20 minute trip it was going to take to get me there. I was not thinking that anything would have changed…. my, my, my…oh how I was wrong.

We met with our sales guy, Doug, and he filled us in on what has been happening at the Orrington and apparently, while I was not looking,  they gutted the entire hotel and did a major 34 million dollar renovation that included adding a 9th floor that is strictly meeting space and even includes an amphitheater (a really feaking cool amphitheater, I love amphitheaters).

Seriously, how did I miss a whole floor being put on a building.

What they have created is a meeting planner friendly hotel that includes lots of breakouts, closets to hide your crap, registration areas and interesting spaces.

From the new 9th floor, your attendees can get great views of Chicago and the lake while they are taking a break or between sessions. There is even the opportunity to walk outside on nice days and take in the view from the terrace. An outdoor terrace in an urban setting with views of a giant lake and America’s third largest city with the best skyline in the World (yes, I am biased, but this is my blog, you want to go on about New York’s skyline, get your own blog)……

Here is the little blurb from the Hotel Orrington Website:

Meeting Room and Ninth Floor Conference Center

No matter what you need – whether it be connecting your group to their colleagues or clients via videoconferencing; recording presentations onto CDs and DVDS for future reference; mass producing reports, agendas, and hand-out materials; lightening-speed T-1 Internet service; state-of-the-art built-in audio/visual capabilities, tackable and writable wall surfaces; designated conference planners; climate-controlled conference rooms; and complimentary wireless Internet – the Hilton Orrington/Evanston is at your service to connect you with success.

When it is time to meet in Chicago, put the Hilton Orrington/Evanston at the top of your list. With a new state-of-the-art Chicago meeting facility built to the International Association of Conference Center (IACC) specifications, we offer planners a wonderful new option for their group functions and events in the Evanston, Illinois area.

Our new ninth-floor meeting facility and conference center is the ideal meeting space on Chicago’s North Shore for meetings of any type. Whether it is a week-long seminar, business retreat, or day-long meeting, our facility – with spectacular views of Chicago and Lake Michigan — is top-notch and designed with everything meeting planners seek today including state-of-the-art technology.

We like to think we offer one of the best meeting facilities on Chicago’s North Shore.

In addition, they have a huge ballroom on the second floor with a sweeping staircase and lots of chandelleirs (think wedding, not meeting). The second floor is not my favorite event space in the place, but it is certainly big and can handle any huge groups that you have coming in if they will not fit on the upper floor. I have to add – just because I do not like the second floor space does not mean it is not nice, others may love it. I prefer my meeting rooms to be more stark and modern, others like a more classic feel, this is really a matter of opinion and no one ever said my opinion was any good.

The entire hotel now has that “swanky old feel” with classic styling with lots of tech touches.Think Sinatra meets Blade Runner without the special effects, Harrison Ford, Oligarchy or Cyborgs….

I cannot personally say how the Orrington’s F&B is, I really was their just to see the meeting space but the restaurants look nice and the clientelle all seemed quite happy. Because I was not able to sample, I did some checking with two planners that have done programs there and from what my “insiders” tell me, the F&B department is quite capable and better than most. One of my sources is a real wanker so if he says it is good, it must be. To give you an idea of how critical he is, if he were stoned, he would poo poo Taco Bell.

The guests rooms are all unique (in a good way) due to the buildings historical certification. The owners did not have the chance to gut to the studs and ruin the hip feel by making all of the rooms identical. The rooms feature large baths and closets, some even have really great views of Evanston.

Orrington Hotel Room
It is worth mentioning that the hotel now flies the Hilton Flag  and with that comes a little Hilton Juice… they have to meet standards and from the looks of things, they are probably exceeding every one. I will say it again, I was shocked by the transformation of the Orrington.

Now, my site visit was a fast one, looking at the meeting and event space to see if it would work for an upcoming client event and yes, it is going to work well. Evanston offers a nice mix of restaurants, retail and culture to suit almost any group and the hotel is now above expectations which will please your attendees.

There is always the impression, especially among Chicagoans, that Evanston is not the easiest place to get too, the city is not right off the expressway, the distance from Midway Airport is a little daunting, blah, blah, blah. Evanston is actually only a couple of miles from the Eden’s Expressway and only an El Ride from Downtown Chicago so it is actually convenient to most of the Northern Chicago area so that “you can’t get there from here” crap can be thrown out the window.

Final thought – Any meeting or event professional that is planning an event in the Chicago area and does not want to be downtown should take a closer look at the Orrington.

A Hard Hat Tour – The JW Marriott Indianapolis

JW Marriott Hard Hat Tour (46)
