Your Social Media Evil Twin is Hurting Your Event

Social Media for Event Planners

Not too long ago, your boss had a really awesome idea. Fire up the social media machine and start a social media campaign to share information out about your conference or event. They would come in droves he said, they would love your event and things would be just amazing.

Everyone thought that this was a great idea. The web is becoming more social and your attendees all seem to be on Twitter and Facebook. How could you fail? What could go wrong… [Read more...]

Eliminate Splash Pages for a Better Event Website

Splash Pages Hurt Conference Websites

You drove into work this morning and stumbled onto this post or perhaps you are reading this in the evening after just getting home. Either way, if you live near a metropolitan area, you probably had a long ride that included other cars, a lot of noise and the dreaded traffic jam.

How did you feel about sitting in traffic and the distractions? How did you like not being able to see what was ahead? Did you try to find shortcuts or did you just go with the flow of traffic? I am sure that your reaction was not a positive one.

Meeting Planner Music Club – Special Edition – MCA

At a young 47, A true music legend has passed away.

MCA (Adam Yauch), one of the three founding members of the Beastie Boys lost his battle with cancer today. The world will sadly be a much quieter place.

From MSNBC:

Yauch co-founded the Beastie Boys with Mike “Mike D” Diamond and Adam “Ad-Rock” Horowitz in 1979. The band started off as a hardcore punk group, but soon began experimenting with hip-hop. The band broke big with their first proper album, “Licensed to Ill,” in 1986, and further albums “Paul’s Boutique,” “Check Your Head” and “Ill Communication” cemented the band as a true superstar act.

In addition to his career with the Beastie Boys, Yauch was heavily involved in the movement to free Tibet and co-organized the Tibetan Freedom Concerts of the late Nineties. In 2002, he launched the film production company Oscilloscope Laboratories.

The Beasties have always been one of my favorite bands, from their old school songs like Fight for your Right and No Sleep Till Brooklyn all the way through songs like Intergalactic and Sabotage.

There is nothing like blasting Sabotage during set up and No Sleep till Brooklyn during tear down.

At the Event – Always Have A Back Up

Adding just one more can save your budget.

Every event planner packs what they need for their event but some forget to bring a back up for essential equipment. This is especially important when planning events and conferences that are outside of the U.S. because things are not always like they are in the States. This is usually a lesson that most planners (and attendees) have to learn the hard way (me included).

A Thought on Event Packing

Packing the camera for this one!

I am off to an event this coming week so I am tossing out a little event packing tip that can save you a ton of hassle.

If you have event electronics to bring with you and don’t have a custom case, it pays to have the original packaging that the item came in. The packing material is custom fitted and brought the item safely from where ever it was manufactured so it is the next best thing to a custom case solution….

Meeting Planner Music Club – Levon Helm

RIP Levon helm, singer and drummer with the Band, one of the most influential bands of all time:

From CNN -

Levon Helm, the drummer, multi-instrumentalist and singer for The Band who kept the band’s heart for more than three decades, died “peacefully” Thursday afternoon, according to his record label, Vanguard Records. He was 71.

A little about Levon Helm from Wikipedia:

Helm was known for his deeply soulful, country-accented voice, and creative drumming style highlighted on many of The Band’s recordings, such as “The Weight”, “Up on Cripple Creek”, “Ophelia” and “The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down”. His 2007 comeback album Dirt Farmer earned the Grammy Award for Best Traditional Folk Album in February 2008, and in November of that year, Rolling Stone magazine ranked him #91 in the list of The 100 Greatest Singers of All Time.
