Osama Bin Laden and your Meetings and Events

Osama on the cover of time

So, they finally got him, the mastermind of the September 11th attacks…. now the question becomes, what does it mean? What does it mean for the meetings and events industry and specifically your event. I have to answer this question because someone actually asked.

Should you cancel an event that you have overseas? Should you send out a warning to your attendees because their could be repercussions from groups that are sympathetic to his cause.

This is not a simple question because no one really knows the answer but I am willing to give it a shot.

It means nothing. Nothing at all. You should already have an emergency plan in place for you event, you should already have back up plans in place for your event and you should know how to react to almost anything. Your event or conference should go forward as planned unless there is a specific threat warning issued to a particular area.

You have to be this way because the question is where… where would someone strike? I would think that Chicago is just as likely as London, Paris just as likely as New York and San Francisco is beautiful this time of year so someone might want to screw it up.

If someone said you are likely to be in a car accident, you would certainly not stop riding in a car. If someone said you will be in a car accident on Tuesday at the intersection of Fear and Loathing, you might want to take the bus that day.

We did not hide yesterday and we will not hide today… it is not how we do things and it is not how we act.

Keith, you make a great point. Aside from longer security lines when traveling, nothing should change for meetings and conferences. Very well-put, “You should already have an emergency plan in place for your event, you should already have back up plans in place for your event and you should not how to react to almost anything.” Contingency plans have been a hot topic with recent natural disasters, but I’m happy to see you touched on Osama Bin Laden – the first mention I’ve seen on a blog from an #eventprof. Way to charge the subject head on!
